Diversity
For the past couple of weeks we have been talking about diversity. I feel this is a great topic to talk about as peer mentors. We will not just be dealing with students of different races or ethnicity, but also with people from different backgrounds. For example, some students will be coming from larger high school and others from smaller ones. The best was to deal with diversity is to go into each class with an open mind. This will also help out the students open their minds to diversity. One way to keep an open mind is to not be judgmental. I feel this is something I myself needs to work on,, not only for this class but for life in general. It is hard not to judge someone at first site. We have these stereotypes in are head ans we assume because of how they look those people will act the same way. In my experience of getting to know people they never compare to the general stereotype. So I try my hardest not to be judgmental, but I find this difficult to do.

I think being judgmental is a very easy thing to do. I think sometimes I do not even realise that I am judging something and instead of looking at something with an open mind. I look at things with an already formed opinion. This is something that is hard to change and sometimes you dont even mean to be mean about it, its just kinda how you see it. I think this is something everyone could work on and I know that I really need to do some work with this topic. It is a hard topic to discuss and hard to understand how other cultures feel about us. Have a great week!!!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you and the stereotypes being ingrained already. It is hard for me not to judge some people at first glance. Not only people that are different than me, but sometimes people who are very similar to me. When I see other girls on campus wearing another house's sorority letters and acting in an embarrassing way, I get really upset because that can reflect on to me and my house, and fuel more stereotyping. Its something we all have to be aware of, not for ourselves, but others as well.
ReplyDeleteIagree that we should not be judgemental of people. Everybody is unique and that is a good thing because the world would be boring if we were all the same. I think everybody is somewhat judgemental at some point and it is something we can all work on!! Good post!
